I remember years ago I was on a plane and landing in the middle of a rain storm. It wasn't a really bad storm, but as the plane was bouncing and bumping and rolling through the dark clouds on its way to the ground, I was a little freaked out. OK... I was A LOT freaked out! I was thankful that there was a trained pilot at the controls that was going to get us safely to our destination. He landed the plane despite my anxious feelings (and those of many other people on the plane that day).
Desire is your rational pilot when the irrational seeds of doubt, frustration, and despair enter your world. If there is no driving desire, then the knowledge and the resources will be of no use. Real, unique, meaningful desire is what will make success happen and is what will make it worthwhile.
When is the last time you revisited your WHY? The true motivation that pushes you forward day in and day out; Your desire in the forefront of your mind that helps you continue even in difficult times? I hope at least weekly.
Check your Desire Daily. Decide that you will do the things necessary to carry you forward. Decide on your core beliefs and (of course) that your family, your health, etc are more important than your business. But then aside from those things, tell yourself that there is NOTHING more important than your success. A couple of years ago I was on a small plane flying from Chicago to Milwaukee. The plane ran into some heavy turbulence and starting bouncing through the air like a rock skipping over a pond. Every time the plane would hit a bump, I'd grip the sides of my seat, because I thought the plane was going to crash.
Every time the flight evened out, I'd relax. I happened to look across the aisle and there sitting next to his mother was a boy of maybe 6 or 7 years old. Whenever time the plane would hit a bump and I'd moan in fear, this boy would go, "Wheeeeeee." And when the plane straightened out and flew smoothly, the boy would get upset. I remember him looking at the ceiling of the plane and in a giggling voice call out, "do it again!"
I realized that this boy and myself were having completely different responses to a situation where we both were being given EXACTLY the same information. Here I was, frightened for my life and the kid thought he was on a roller coaster. I was stressed and he wasn't! I got so mad at him. Then I got mad at myself. I thought back to my college psychology class when I learned about the stimulus response theory; the S-R equation. Now, if a stimulus leads to a response, how come this bumpy stimulus led to several different responses? It must have something to do with that dash between the "S" and the "R". That dash is where my belief about the stimulus comes in. In other words, my self-talk about the flight determined that it was dangerous. The kid's self-talk was that this was fun.
Bingo! So stress is not an event itself, it's our perception about the event as stressful! And stress is not a FACT. It's a FEELING. Since we can't always change the way the world works, our best shot at managing stress lies in our learning to manage the "dash," that interval between the event and our belief about that experience.
As I struggle to keep negative stress at bay, I've come to realize that are only two kinds of events in this world- those we can control and those we cannot. And at any one time, we have only two choices. We can either act or not act. This concept is easily illustrated in a 4-part matrix, also know as the consultant's dream whereby any complex idea can be easily broken into 4 quadrants.
When you act on something you can control, we call that mastery.
When you act on something you cannot control, such as the weather, traffic jams or other peoples' behavior, we call that ceaseless striving. Actually, I used to call that ceaseless striving until I was presenting a program for a group of kindergarten teachers. One of the teachers raised her hand at this description and remarked that this description reminded her of the gerbil in her classroom. An animal forever expending energy and getting nowhere. So I now I refer to acting on something I cannot control as "gerbilizing." Nothing stops me faster from getting stressed than picturing a gerbil with moustache and glasses frustratingly getting nowhere.
When you do not act on something you can control, that's "giving up."
Sometimes that's good, sometimes that's bad. When you're really busy and someone asks you to do something and you say, "I can't. Talk to me later," that's good. You're not acting on something you can control. If you're given an opportunity to do something that's a bit challenging and you are afraid and say no, that's not so good. When you do not act on something you cannot control, that's "letting go." I believe the key to enjoying life is learning, as much as possible, to act on things you can control and let go of things you cannot control. This is what I mean by "managing the dash."
I fly a lot. How do I control this particular dash about my stress around flying? I learned what turbulence is all about and that planes are built to take it pretty much in stride. I watch the flight attendants to see confidence in action. I do not leave home without telling my loved ones that I love them. I remind myself that driving is statistically more dangerous than flying so I'd really feel dumb if I got off a plane and was killed in a car crash leaving the airport.

As a young entrepreneur who has been in the world of business going to 5 years now, from my little experience I can categorically tell you this - business is not a 100 meters dash, but a marathon. In my opinion, the major cause of many business failures is because of the short term get-rich-quick mindset a lot of entrepreneurs bring into the business world. Why Business is like Farming
Before the advent of industrialization, there existed only two types of business; hunting and farming. Hunters are known to kill what they eat, while farmers are known to grow what they eat. In the short run, the hunter may seem smarter than the farmer, since their efforts seem to yield faster results - point and kill. But on the long run, a farmer's effort pays more even though it may appear slower because their efforts tend to yield longer lasting results.
For instance, when a farmer plants a seed, it grows into a tree that continues to provide food for the farmer over a long period of time so long as the tree is properly nurtured. But when a hunter kills an animal, the meat cannot sustain him for long, so he constantly needs to be hunting for animals to kill every time he needs to eat.
Rarely do hunters hunt today what they will eat tomorrow. Why would they want to do such a thing, when they can just readily kill another animal and have a fresh supply of meat as the need arises? Just knowing that there are always animals in the bush completely dissolves the hunter's need to plan for the long term. Why bother storing meat, when you can get it fresh whenever you need it? In other words, hunting is for eating.
This is not the case with farmers. You cannot hope to eat today the yam or apple you planted today, or even yesterday, or even a month ago. Why? Because crops unlike animals in the bush takes time to grow and are not stumbled upon, but rather are cultivated. Unlike hunting, you cannot walk into a farm with the hope of harvesting a crop you didn't plant.
In farming, to harvest [reap], you must plant [sow]. You get only as much as you've given. Therefore, to eat well tomorrow, means you must have planted what you intend to harvest a long time ago. This is the same principle on which successful businesses are built.

To succeed in the world of business, as an entrepreneur, you must get rid of every get-rich-quick mindset of a hunter and begin to embrace the grow-rich-big mindset of a farmer. Hunters are more into business for the immediate gains it can bring, while farmers are in it for the long haul. Success as it ironically turns out, comes only to the farmer and not to the hunter.
In business, just like farming, you don't build to reap fast [quick], you build to reap large [big]. You want to reap what will sustain you over a long period of time while you are waiting for the next harvest to come. Because you know how long you must wait to reap, you make sure what you sow is of the best quality so that it doesn't wither and die before the next harvest season. This is why every farmer only sows their best seeds.
How much [quantity] and how well [quality] you harvest [reap] is dependent on the quantity and quality of the seed you planted [sow]. Farmers have discovered the secret of success; they sow as much as they want to reap. They spend the majority of their time planting and cultivating rather than hunting, because they have realized that what you grow [plant and cultivate] yields a far greater returns than what you get [hunt and kill].
To tap into this secret, you must consistently apply the following principles in your business;
1. Cultivate BEFORE planting: You cannot walk into a piece of land and start planting without first cultivating. For every kind of crop there's a totally different kind of cultivation. In fact, it is the sheer art of cultivation that transforms an ordinary piece of land into a farm. You cannot cultivate a piece of land to plant oranges then suddenly change your mind after cultivation and started planting corn. No, you would have to cultivate the land all over again to accommodate the corn you now want to plant. Different crops require different cultivation.
How Are You Cultivating Your Business?
The cultivation phase of every business is the pre-market entry stage. This is when you go into detailed planning of what your business is going to be about. Cultivation is the preparation phase of every business. Like farming, the kind of business you want to go into is the crop [product/service], while the land itself is the particular market you want to serve.
This is where you define your business and define the kind of market offering and target customers you want. This stage cannot be hurried. Like in the case of farming, every business requires a different form of planning. The survival of the business is dependent on how well you plan before hitting the market [cultivate the land before planting].
However, what I have noticed so far is that many entrepreneurs simply stumble into business without taking out time to think through and plan how they really want to succeed. The surprising thing is that they often don't realize that a plan is a preview of what their business will be like in reality. So they skip this phase and head on straight to planting, which can only be successful based on the kind of cultivation done and the kind of crop being planted.
2. Focus on growing NOT hunting: To grow means you plant and cultivate, which obviously takes time. To hunt means searching and killing, which obviously doesn't take as much time as farming. As an entrepreneur who wants to build a successful business, you don't want to hunt down your customers; rather you should focus on growing them.
A customer that you hunt down and get money from without first ensuring that a perceived superior value has been provided would only do business with you once, and then like a hunter you will be back in the bush searching for a new customer to kill [sell to].

3. Always select and ONLY plant your best seeds: A farmer doesn't eat their best crops; they are specially reserved for planting. Your best seeds are your best ideas. They are not the best because they are get-rich-quick schemes; they are the best because they possess the potential of yielding long term returns on investment. They are the ideas that will separate you from the pack and help you stand out from the crowd over a long period of time.
They are the ideas that can stand the test of time. They don't wither and die before their harvest time. Meaning, your best ideas are long term in nature may often seem like a waste of time in the beginning because their results are not immediate.
How do you know if an idea is the best or not?
Your best ideas rely on your core areas of strength. That is, they are dependent on what you are most passionate about. Be careful not to follow the bandwagon just because an idea promises fast short term results, they are dream killers. Focus and pursue only the ideas that leverage your passion, gifts or talents and are long term in nature. They cannot be destroyed easily or quickly by competitions because they are uniquely created from your ingenuity.
4. Don't expect IMMEDIATE returns: The farmer knows better not to harvest a crop until it is fully ripe. The same principle must be applicable to business. Every idea, project or business is like a seed, it needs time to germinate and eventually become ripe for harvest. Never expect to reap loads of profit from an idea, project or business that is not fully matured.
How do you know when an idea, project or business is fully matured or ripe for harvest?
When it has been fully embraced by the target market and has produced several positive results in the lives of those using it. Meaning, every idea, project or business must go through a testing period whereby it will have to earn credibility in the marketplace. Your idea, project or business is ripe when it has gained public or market acceptance and trust.
No one but into the idea of the Wright Brothers when they began the quest of making men fly through an aero plane. It took them time and persistence before the world beat a path to their door. Google didn't become a mainstream idea until after three years of being in operation. Facebook and Twitter never became a global phenomenon overnight, it took time.

Throughout my life I have observed groups of people as they've gone through difficult times of all sorts, including economic. Some of these were brought on by poor business decisions. Some have been brought on by labor strikes, and some have been brought on by physical injury or various infirmities.
In each group however, there always seems to be those outstanding individuals that exemplify the indomitable American spirit. While everyone else has been put on hold these people do incredible things. They are often looked up to and sometimes written about. The one thing they all have in common is that they seem to have what I can only call, a "ferocious" determination to get to where they want to go. If you throw one object in front of them, they will throw it back at you. If it's too heavy, they will find a way to go over it, around it, under it or through it.
Some of these people are the obnoxious sort that seem to have come out of the womb fighting. With others there is a quiet resolve that if you could measure it, you wouldn't even consider getting in its way. For some it springs out of stubbornness. For others it springs from a refusal to be dominated. I think for others, it is a strength of will that is convinced that the path that is being taken is the right one, and that it's end is worth whatever it takes to get there.
In the sports world we have seen many stories of this spirit. We've heard of golfers that would swing a club at a ball literally 1,000 times a day, every single day, six days a week, rain, hail, or brutal sun. They knew they would have to do this to be the best. We see Lance Armstrong who has refused to let cancer beat him down and instead has beaten his opponents down and has risen to the highest levels in his sport AFTER almost dying from cancer.
Personally though, I have seen this spirit in a number of people. I think of my Uncle Hank (Henry Kazmark) whose leg was blown off in the Korean War. I would only be speculating as to what drove him to excel in so many of the things he did. He was a better snow skier than most of the people on the mountain using his prosthetic leg (and no outriggers). He looked like a torpedo when he body surfed and could catch waves and ride them further in than almost anyone else out in the water. But what I saw on the beach at Lake San Antonio, California one day, really inspired me on what it means to persevere. He had seen other people performing waterskiing "beach starts" to get up on one ski. The technique involved standing on one leg and holding the other ski above the water, throwing a coil of rope out in front of you and yelling, "Hit it!" When the line goes taut, you fly forward and step up onto your now planing ski.
Since he skied with only one leg it didn't seem possible for him to do a beach start because he lacked a leg to stand on while he held the other ski up in the air. He wanted to do a beach start nevertheless, and rigged up a beach chair next to the water. You almost hated to look. It seemed like it would either rip his arms out of their sockets or launch him head first into the air. It was an incredible sight. The line went tight and yanked him out of that chair, through the air, in at least a 20 foot arc, without him even coming close to landing on his ski. He came up out of the water, signaled that he was alright, got out of the water, and quietly hopped back to the chair, to try it again. I couldn't believe it. I don't know how many times we saw him get launched out of that chair but he would not give up. Every time he hopped out of the water, everyone thought for sure that that would be his last try. Yet he returned to that chair, gathered up the rope and yelled, "hit it" again and again. I don't remember if he ever got the method to work or not. It didn't really matter. The only thing that impressed this pre-teen kid is that for those that want something bad enough, they will buffet themselves and do absolutely whatever it takes (morally) to achieve their goal. They will not give up as long as there is an ounce of strength left in them.
I have met people who were as determined to succeed in their business goals as my Uncle Hank was in his athletic endeavors. People like this don't seem to accept "No" or "Can't" for an answer. They beat their head against the wall until they find a way to make it work.
A noted business leader Nancy Dornan talks about crises and how a champion reacts to them. On Network 21's "Driving the Miles" tape she is quoted as saying the following:
"In crisis a champion does not give in to that wave of, 'I just want to run.' A champion redoubles their efforts. A champion says, 'No! I will not give up. I will not give in.' It's awful. It's painful. But that's what champions do."
Why is succeeding at our businesses so important and why do some seem to have this laser beam focus on what they want to achieve. A blind high school student expressed it this way, "Success is possessing the capability for self-determination. Self determination is the ability to decide what I want to do with my life, and then to act on that decision." I think that is what drives so many of us in this bad economy.
You may have heard that you are not going to be able to retire when you planned or not at all, that you aren't going to be able to send your kid to the school best suited for him or her, that your child can't participate in the activities he or she loves because you can't afford it, that you can't take a family vacation together for another 5 years, and that you may have to put your family pet down because you just can't afford the treatments. Some of us hear all of that, get depressed, and accept it as "just the way it is." Others of us think about those options for a few seconds, stand up, square our shoulders, point our finger straight out and yell loud and long, "NO" at the top of our lungs. Then we hunker down and figure out what it takes to make sure none of those things happen. And we do whatever it takes.
When that doesn't work we try another way, and another, and another. We evaluate what we're doing, we read, we study, we humble ourselves and talk to others who are further along than ourselves at what we want to do, we evaluate our business and ourselves to find weak points, or points that can be improved, and we redouble our efforts until we succeed. Everything is out there that we need - the ideas, the techniques, the people, etc. The real challenge is ourselves. There are people who are going to do amazing things in this economy. They will look at this as the best time in their lives because it brought out the creativity and the fight they never had before. They are the ones writing next year's incredible story with their lives even as you read this. You can decide right now to be one of them.
